Since the advent of wheels under walking frames, walkers have become an indispensable walking aid. It is used by many people around the world.
The choice of a walking aid must be adapted to the person’s abilities and the environment in which it will be used.
The walker has several advantages:
🔹It provides constant support on the ground (the frame must not be raised)
🔹It’s stable (large sustentation base)
🔹It provides support for both hands (for stability)
🔹It’s usually fitted with large wheels for travelling on uneven ground.
🔹It comes with a bag or basket
🔹It’s usually possible to sit on it (to take a break if need be).
🔹There are brakes just in case…
The walker is particularly suitable for outdoor use because..:
🔹Distances are greater than at home.
🔹The ground is + irregular (gravel, cobblestones, …), with slopes, rises, tilts.
🔹Transporting equipment (jacket, groceries, etc.) is often necessary.
Indoors, the use of a walker becomes less optimal for several reasons:
🔹The walker is often too bulky to fit between the furniture in the home.
🔹It monopolizes both hands. Interaction with the environment is limited (e.g. carrying an object).
🔹Distances are shorter than outdoors. Walking indoors is less tiring. The walker gives too much help. No need to sit on it when I can sit on a chair at home.
🔹The floor is flat and there is furniture/walls to stand on. The person often doesn’t need that much help.
🔹The walker is difficult to handle.
Faced with this situation, the person using the walker outdoors has several options for indoors:
🔹Continue to use the walker indoors.
🔹Use a classic cane (which has to be lifted with every step and falls to the ground when dropped against furniture). Comfort is often reduced.
🔹Don’t use anything. The person will then lean on all the furniture and walls. Risk is increased and comfort is reduced.
Wheeleo® offers an additional solution to this situation:
✅ Admittedly, it gives less assistance than a walker, but it’s still sufficient given the environment (indoors, flat floor, short distance, …).
✅ It releases one hand to interact with the environment (open a door, pick up an object, etc.).
✅ It takes up less space than a walker. Greater manoeuvrability. (see video)
✅ Stays upright when released (to wash hands, cut fruit, etc.)
✅ It offers the same type of assistance as a walker (constant support, does not need to be lifted).
