Jade, Traumatic Brain Injury

Effect of Wheeleo® on the spontaneous walking speed of a person with severe traumatic brain injury.

In the majority of neurological rehabilitation centers, the quadripod or tripod cane is still widely used for patients with an invalid hand (paralysis) and suffering from motor disorders.

However, these tools, although having long been the default choice, are now surpassed by more effective solutions, such as the Wheeleo®.

The Impact of Wheeleo® on Spontaneous Walking

A recent video illustrates the effect of Wheeleo® on the spontaneous walking speed of Jade, a patient with severe traumatic brain injury. Thanks to this device, Jade walks three times faster, and this in a completely spontaneous manner.

This increase in speed is not forced; on the contrary, it results from a natural need for balance, while optimizing the body’s energy expenditure.

Why is Spontaneous Walking Speed a Key Indicator?

Spontaneous walking speed is the speed at which the patient moves without external constraint. It respects safety limits while taking into account the patient’s stability needs.

When this speed increases with the use of a mobility aid, it generally means that this aid is better suited.

In Jade’s case, her increase in speed, associated with greater autonomy, indicates that the Wheeleo® is particularly well-suited for her.

Regained Autonomy Thanks to Wheeleo®

The most striking aspect of this case is not only the spectacular increase in speed (tripled), but especially the fact that Jade has regained her autonomy.

She moves alone in the hospital, going from her room to her treatments, to the restaurant, and even to the smoking area.

Comparison with the Quadripod Cane: a Matter of Time

The question then arises: how long would it have taken Jade to achieve such a walking speed with a quadripod cane?
The answer is simple: probably never.

The quadripod cane, when used systematically, limits the patient’s progress and does not promote such a marked improvement in autonomy and walking speed.

Conclusion

The positive effects of Wheeleo® on Jade’s spontaneous walking demonstrate the importance of using mobility aids adapted to the specific needs of patients.

The quadripod cane, although historical, no longer meets the modern requirements of rehabilitation. Solutions like Wheeleo® should be considered to truly improve the quality of life of patients.
