The patient shows a slight lateropulsion, meaning a tendency to fall towards their paretic side.

This lateropulsion almost completely disappears when walking with a handrail, but it slightly reappears when using a conventional mobility aid. To correct this movement, we use the Wheeleo® set in the low position. This configuration naturally encourages the patient to <g id="gid_1">straighten up</g> and seek stable support on the correct side. By leaning towards their Wheeleo®, they gradually correct their lateropulsion.

The Importance of Guidance and Rhythm

To support this correction, we also guide their right foot using a Velpeau band. This tool allows for:

to give rhythm to walking,

to position the foot precisely, far enough forward and to the side,

to limit the therapist’s effort.

We keep the handrail and wall nearby so that the patient maintains secure reference points throughout the exercise.

Progression in Phases

In the first phase, we ask the patient to take the time to position their center of gravity above their support, a movement that is unnatural when lateropulsion is present.

Gradually, with repeated practice, the patient integrates this correction. Their walking then becomes:

more natural,

more stable,

more fluid,
while requiring minimal intervention from the physiotherapist.

Why the Wheeleo® Makes a Difference

The Wheeleo® is not just a simple mobility aid: it guides posture, promotes correct support, and improves movement fluidity. The user learns to reposition themselves correctly, better control their center of gravity, and restart their walking independently.

Conclusion

Gait rehabilitation in hemiparetic patients involves correcting compensations such as lateropulsion. The Wheeleo® offers a progressive, secure, and effective approach, where the patient regains confidence and autonomy, and the physiotherapist’s role becomes that of a minimalist guide.

To discover this approach in a video on YouTube: Watch the full video.

In this video, we follow a patient with right hemiparesis during their walking exercises, accompanied by their physiotherapist.
